To grow a plant with a Christmas Tree vine pattern, are the first few vines near the stump normally removed?

Some growers remove side vines close to the stump to impart more energy to the main, is what I've read. Keep in mind that if the main doubles or flats or does any other ugly thing, you'd be well off having a side vine close by to train into a new main...just a thought. Good luck! Duff

Good advice Duff. I never like to take off early secondaries too early for the "just in case" scenario that you described.

Another application is, to bring the first three or four back past the stump instead, of straight out, from the main. If the third still looks good later you can flag the third and the fourth to utilize the available space where the first two have failed or needed to be removed, for any other reason.

Dwaine, thanks for chiming in....you've been missed.

I think as long as the first few secondaries are trained and dead headed like a nornal secondary, their energy goes back to the main vine as well.

80% of my plants I grew last year I grew with the first 4 secondaries back and past the stump about 10 feet. This worked out really well and gave me alot more plant I could grow for the small areas.

At what angle should these secondaries be when they are trained back past the stump??

As far as they need to be without breaking. Maybe 20-30° back from a right angle.
