I want to cut off the secondaries off the one side of the plant and let the Other side grow.
Can i cut them close to the vine or how long should i let them get ?

The choice is yours. All cut off at the main, on one side, is called the flag pattern. Grow the vines, to your patch configuration. You need four to seven hundred square feet of canopy. It does not matter how large the leaves or how many as long as the basic canopy is developed and, in good physical shape.

I found that if I let it grow out a couple leaves on the cut side it helped anchored the plant a little better.

MOST growers require a minimum of 400 sq.ft. to grow a 500# pumpkin. However, there have been instances of a few growers hitting nearly 1000# in that space.

Da wiz, Don't worry my friend! 400 sq foot can grow a monster too. My patch is 380 sq foot in a real hot southern climate and I was going over 1000 last year until I split. These plants will amaze you.
