I already see in the diaries some big pumpkins and or some flowers beginning, etc. Isn't this a bit early? I would think we are shooting for October time frame and that the "golden" week was the first week in July to pollinate. Are these headstarts or am I way behind. I understand foreign growers may have a different schedule and even certain parts of the US, but in the US aren't we all shooting for the same Halloween time frame?
What am I missing?

Petman...You need to talk to successful growers in your area. Do what they do.....don't worry what others are posting on this site. Some know what they are doing...others are "clueless"! It can be very confusing to a "newbie".

Eventually I can see a different time frame consisting of the same number, of growing days, for different regions, in the world including USA. Experience, records and time must be worked out, by taking part, in the GPC.
Somehow, some day, we must unite together under one or two flags at the most. Then fairness considering regions growing facts will possibly come into play.

many "southern" growers are way ahead of northen growers. Our season is much hotter and starts earlier. Take for example myself in san diego, I will polinate in about 14 to 21 days. Ben in arizona, is just ending his season due to really high heat conditions, so it really can vary due to region.

I started one plant way early and kept in a heated hoop-house, for a fair in mid-Aug. I pollinated my first 'kin on Monday. Not too tough to start one early and bring it in early. The other four in my patch are 2' or less in vine length. Do whatcha gotta' do!!! Peace, Wayne PS....well not too tough to start one early anyways...bringin it in is another story!!!! LOL

Petman, 120 days is about what you need to get a whopper to maturity, Here on the 49th parallel (or was it 48th?) we calculate from last frost date in the spring to first frost date in the fall and adjust our "protection" to try and hit the early October weigh-offs. Works for us northerners and works out around Halloween, however some of our Southern Brothers get big ole Giant Punkins in late August! Personally I dont care if you get a monster in December as long as its weighed and sound its official!
