Seems to me that the buckwheat would remove more nutrients from the soil than the small weeds. Face it....an AG grower's life in June and July is continual plant and weed control.

Al Eaton grows Buckwheat in front of the plant and kills it off as the plant expands. Buckwheat is one of those good cover crops that actually helps with nutrients/ Not like a legume though.

buckwheat has a massive root system, shades out weeds if planted thick, grows fast, and adds tons of OM when turned in
I have used it for many years in various applications,,does well in low PH soils,,only drawback for me is that it frosts easily.

that said I have seen many growers here that plant it AHEAD of the plant(then turn it in),,in with the plant would make a real mess IMO

Seems to me a soil surface completely uncovered would lose the beneficial bacteria without any roots to live in. So turning under the life support as the plant approaches would help maintain the bacteria and be abundant once the plant reached that spot. I think Mr. Eaton has something there.

As an experiement I have Big N Alfalfa growing in the patch with my 1095. As the plant needs room, I plan to cut it and use it as both a mulch and in my compost tea.

I was thinking of growing buckwheat ahead of my plants as well, but never got around to planting it. I think it would be good to do as Monty says and mulch with it this season, then chop it up and till it in the fall
