Dan Carlson here lookign for some input.....Marc and I started a early fruit for our state fair and I have an issue I have not seen before...We'll I have seen it before but not to this degree.....The plant seemed fine but out of the blue the side vines have stopped growing and look stunted.....some sides look fine...but atleast half have been effected and it seemed to happen after they reach say the 3 to 4 foot range...very strange and I am thinking of yanking the whole plant..I have seen some plants throw a weak or stunted side vine every now and then but not this many?? Anyone have any thoughts?? Not much we can do about it and pulling it would not break my heart...Sometimes things slike this happen I guess....15 years doign it and there ALWAYS seems to be something!!LOL!! DAN

Dan, Last year I had a couple of plants that grew weak secondaries, even shorter than yours, and they seemed to terminate into a cluster of micro-male flower buds(do you see this at the secondary tips?). These were in another garden, the plant I grew in the main garden grew just fine. I don't know what caused it? I thought it was possibly due to something environmental, in that garden. One of the plants eventually started throwing normal, vigorous secondaries around the 8' mark(on the mainvine), and beyond. The other plant was just stunted.

Dan,
Has it been cool & wet there too?
I just noticed the "wrinkled leaf" thing on my wife's Dahlias. This has been the phenolic indicator of the Virus I've been dealing with here. So even though I'm not growing AGs here at home this year, I know that this is the week I would have experienced the "great stall".
Do you see any wrinkled leaves?

Dan, I'm seeing the same as what Doug mentioned a cluster of male and females at the end. I have had maybe 6 on one plant and one on the 1432. The rest of the both plants are healty. With the hot weather and both these plants still in the high tunnel I have been turning on the misters every day for the last two weeks. I would conclude that it is a very rich environment and and abundance of mositure. Dan we still will have monsters. Bill

Sorry to hear that Dan, was looking forward to seeing you take back the Iowa fair record. I hope you figure out a way to keep it going. Best of luck.

My 914 letourneau did this also...I had run out of soil to cover the vines and went and got some from a composting section...I believe it wasn't done composting and was still very hot with nitrogen..all the vines burst into the micro buds and virtually terminated themselves there..the rest of the plant kept growing normally..I can't say that was the cause for sure..but I never did that again!
