Something iv wondered is how does this add up ?? Several big name growers have said they like to have 500-700 sq ft plants !! But what i wonder is- How it is concedered that much sq ft ? when they say they like to pollenate at 15 ft out & have 12 ft secondarys & only a little bit of plant after pumpkin ?? my addition says a total width of 24 ft,,, Then times 15 ft out is 360 ,, then pluss aprox 20-40 sq ft after pumpkin--- For a total of 400 sq ft !!!! ?????

Last yr i had plants that seemed massave ,Atleast too me, but id say it was aprox 552 sq ft ,, first secondarys were over 16 ft then towards pumpkin aprox 12 ft average of 14 ea ,, then pollenate at 16 ft out = 28 x 16 = 448 pluss they were spidered a bit with 2 ft witdth behind pumpkin for a total of another 64 ft ,, plus aprox 40 after pumpkin for a total of 552 ,, JUST CURIOUS ????

I guessed on my sq feet on my 845 I grew last year, I walked off 45 small steps by about 24 small steps,it didnt fill every spot completly but it was over 900 sq ft. My other plants was about what your talking about fish, and some where even smaller, now that I think about it my 763 I grew was alot smaller sq footage. Good point Fish.

we start pollinating at a minimum of 12 ft from base. usually its the second or third pollination that ends up being a keeper. by the time you start at 12 ft and end up keeping the second or third pollination , then grow a good size piece of plant after ( plus we dont dead end the mains until the very last week) you usually end up from 550 to 650 sq ft. the less plant you have between the fruit and base means you need more from pumpkin to end of plant. reason in my opinion? growth between pumpkin and base gets very old by the end of the second month of feeding the pumpkin. growth after the fruit supplies more feeding to make up the difference. my opinion only.pumpkins do back feed. we proved that the year we put 500 lbs on a pumpkin that had no base and a three ft piece of main leading to the fruit. went from 400 to 919 in that condition.( the plant at this point may have been 175 sq ft.)

Pap,
I will concur with you. My plant died from the main up to the fruit this year and was still putting on the same daily pounds for 30 days.
