My seeds are now up & I'm only one day away from (trans)planting, but my problem is this: the seed I was expecting the most from (1233) doesn't look very good, while my last-minute additions (603 and 689) do. I have to decide which plant will get the most space, and I don't really know how to go about it... In your past experience, has the early performance of a seedling been a good predictor for the plant's future performance, in which case I should pick the healthiest seedling? Or should I disregard that and base my decision on genetics, past performance of the seed, etc.?

Thanks for your patience in hearing out a newbie's annoying questions!

p.s. I posted pics in my diary.

Why not plant them all and give them a couple of weeks before making the call as to which to cull? Lots of things can happen between now and then. Pretty hard to make any kind of choice as to which will throw the biggest fruit at this point.

I heard about a guy in NY that grew something over 1400# on a runt last year,,,,,

Oliver, don't discount the 1233 until you see some more leaves and even then.A friend of mine had a 1037 last year, his biggest ever on his smallest plant ever.I like the advice you got a few weeks ago on which plant to grow.

oddly, my 689.5 was an ugly duckling, whereas right alongside it and sprouted at the same time is the
Russ Pugh Orange Cross (869.5 X SELF) same as the
689.5, and that one is kicking butt, just like your
603 and 689.5.
they are planted side-by-side at a neighbor's patch
with all the room they will need....
anyway, if the 1233.5's leaves are not limp and floppy
i would still incorporate it into the plan; since it appears to be leaning to one side, you could put it in a
window to get it to straighten up and then it wouldn't
LOOK like it is gonna poop-out on you. no CONSTANT lighting though-----just day and night as if outdoors but the light from the one side only would straighten it up.
thereby making planting easier and maybe after a few days more the true leaf will indicate direction. hope this helps a little---eric g--been offa here too long! i am back-----

Thanks everyone for the advice! I went ahead and planted the 603 in the main patch; I'll wait till tommorow or thursday to decide the fate of the 689 and 1233. One of the two will be a genetics plant; the second will either be my main plant or it'll be trained as a snake if it underperforms... I'm still leaning towards the 689 for the main patch, though...the 1233 is increasingly falling behind; @ day 9 it still hasn't opened its first true leaf.

Pumpkinpal, pleased to hear that you're growing the 689! Good luck with it-- when/if this seed ever hits 1000 lbs., it'll become very hot...
