Just below the seed leaves, when the main vine leaned over and started to run the stump has a kink in it, like a garden hose does on a cold day. The kink is between the ground and seed leaves, I think Bryan buried it a little shallow, this is were the stump/vine is white and is normally below ground. This is Bryan Dueck's plant and is the 805. We have been talking about the effects of this and looking for other peoples opinion. We are undecided whether this will effect the nutrient flow from the main rooting area. The plant is now 7ft long and is a little slower in growth compared to others and secondaries are skinner and leaves are smaller then normal for an 805 plant. Can reply to post or if worried about nasty remarks please feel free to email me. Thank you for your thoughts and ideas.

my assumption would be that once the plant has a few secondaries that are buriable, this kinky situation will be forgotten about. but, who am i until i get one over a thou?
once, i thought i had a thought, but i forgot to remember it so i don't know what it was....good luck with it--eric g

Any thoughts are welcome Eric, just looking for ideas not here to bash anyone. Maybe someone has a thought that would never occur to me.

I have a plant that kinked a little "above" the stump, growth remained with the rest of the plants during some cool/cold nights. Now that secondarys are being buried and the roots are forming along the main, the main has increased size(diameter) and is growing well. Flowers look good and first female at 9'. My plan is to let keep all secondarys and grow them all to the edge of the patch up to the selected fruit, then make a decision as to a plan from there out.
I'd say give it some time and TLC.

Drew,
I can only specualate. Maybe the initial growth will be affected by the kink. Hopefully, if some of the plumbing(sorry, I forgot my botony terms) is cut off/restricted, the other "pipes" (around the kink) will compensate eventually, and make up the difference(no way to know for sure, I guess).
Is there a back-up plant? I know Bryan has done awesome with the 805 Pukos in the past.

Drew,

Is it too late to *push* a little soil up under the main to un-kink it? Or are cracks developing?

I think the kink may have slowed the plant down some drew but like a kinked hose when the pressure builds up the blockage will correct its self and the developement of other roots under the main and secoundaries will adjust its self to make up for any problems. The only thing different will be is a mutanted stump. mark

Drew, Not to worry homie, the plant will "adjust" as it grows to maturity (sets a punkin). We have had the kinky vine thing too (useually due to wind) and yes it sets the momentum back a bit, but the vine always seems to adjust itself to insure survival of its fruits seeds. We had to put styrofoam under the vine at the stump on several plants "stragically" at the flop over stage this year as some of them were 4 to 5 feet long before they touched down! Kinks suck but with your track record I'm sure you will still kick my ass with your kinky ole plant!

Drew I have grown two like that and they both ended up over 1100 LB, would they have bin any bigger with out the kink? One of the plants started out slow and ended up as big as all the rest the other one grew normal.

My 842 had a early kink in it last year & it broke the 1000# barrier. As it grew bigger around, the kink almost disappeared completely. If I didn't know where it had kinked, I probably wouldn't have be able to notice where it was by the end of July. I think Brian will be fine. If it's an 805 he's growing then I'm sure a 1200#+ pumpkin is in the cards for him. He just can't lose with that seed.

Take care.

Unless the kink actually broke the tissue on the inside of the vine, I cant see how it would slow it down at all. If Dick and Ron can grow 919 on 125 sq ft and no stump, then Bryan can grow a good sized pumpkin on a kinky vine
