I was just messing around looking at some old diaries and came across something I found interesting. I also heard this somewhere last winter and couldnt put my finger on where. If you take your 30 day weights and then double the figure, it seems a pretty good indication as to what your pumpkin will weigh come October. If anyone has some notes from the past years would you care to post your 30 day est weights and your actuals weights from weigh off time and lets see how close this theory is.

example -- 731.2 Doucet '04 = final weight
30 day est weight = 350
double it = 700 -- difference of 31.2 not to far off.

There was a discussion about this last season. Generally speaking half-weight is usually between day 30-35. The problem is if a pumpkin is growing at 30 lbs a day, that's 150 lbs over 5 days x 2, which means that you could be out 300 lbs at the end.

I didnt say it was perfect just ran a few numbers and it was close, kind of a fun exercise thats all. Day 30 is just a day most of us use as a mile marker.

depends on the fruit, some fruit slow down fast, others keep going much longer which is wha twe diesire. My fruit was estimated at 395 day 30 last year, it split and went down early at day 55 and was estimated at 950 lbs, was on a pace for 1150 estimated. My fruit weighed light, but as you can see, 1150 is way above 800 lbs by your theory. I would say day 35 to 36 is a better half way estimate for a good fruit.

here are my thoughts on the subject

30 days 500 to 600 contender 200 to 300 pretender
60 days 1100 to 1200 contender 600 to 700 pretender
90 days 1300 to 1400 contender 800 to 900 pretender

day thirty weight plus roughly double that for day 60 then add 40 percernt of your day 30 estimate for a final target.

* thats for the competition aspect of the hobby. strictly for the intense stay at home, come in every night with your knees dirty bunch.

Even doubling day 35 numbers comes in way low for past pumpkins grown in my patch. Example: day 36 was 320.4 est for a final weight prediction of 640.8. Final weight was actually 1028.5. Just one example, but all of the fruit that made it to maturity were 150 or more pounds heavier than doubling the day 35 weight.

Different for everyone. How's this: day 30 - 373 est. lbs
day 60 - 1087 lbs. Fanal weight - 1200 lbs.
And that weight was 70 lbs light to the chart.
Moral of the story - don't get down just because you don't have a 500 - 600 lber on day 30. It aint over till the fat lady's signing, baby!
