once again, it looks as if I am going down to vine/stump rot just like last year, but in a different way. But wanted to post to see if anyone has any advice. About 6 inches from the base of the stump, I had a parallel vine split that I thought was healed over fine. Well, it started looking a little brown with just a very small amount of mush wetness, barely any. So I took extreme measures yesterday and cut into the vine where it was all healthy vine and cut out the rot, repasted sulfer and covered the area from my misters. There was now a hole in the top of the vine and everything looked healthy inside.

So today I go to the patch, and the entire hole in the vine and stump is full of fluid and the top of where I cut into the good vine is wet and mushy a little. So I was shocked to see this so fast!!!! I checked to make sure my misters weren't getting under the plastic cover, and it "looked" like the cover was blocking the water fine. SO I can only assume it is from rot. Has anyone ever experienced such a fast liquid build up like this? Looks like my stump is toast, second year in a row with bad luck. :( Oh well, got lots of secondary roots down, see what happens. Any info is appreciated. Thanks, Jimmy

drill the vine low and drain the fluid.
get some soil and root powder and cover all the stump that you can.

Next year get the plastic out of the patch and some good fresh air and oxygen, in the patch. If it was there as a mulch use the hoe until you warm up and then mulch with leaves and or straw.

I had no plastic in the patch doc, just had a plastic covering over the vine split to keep it dry, other than that, it had plenty of air.

Is the fluid sort of orangey-yellow like watered down Orange Juice? The mushy areas...are they edged in orange?

well, no, the fuid was clearish, but it had sulfer in it from what I put over the wounded area, so it was kind if clear and white from the sulfer. Mushy area is not colored in anyway. I really wonder, because I checked tonight, the area seems pretty solid and the liquid is gone, I drained it out. I just wonder if me cutting into the vine so much caused a "normal" fluid rush from the wound that filled in the vine and made the sulfer feel mushy a little. Since tonight, it looks better. weird. I guess my hope is that the fuid was caused by the cut and not by rot. Any thoughts? Only time will tell huh

Grow your plant like a clone / stumpless as a last resort, as it will still put down a good root system given the correct technique. Make sure you cut all of the rotted vine away, then take it easy on the misting to let the rotted area dry, and bury lots of secondaries to get that good root system and watch it take off. Shade cloth may be needed in your climate to compensate for the lack of misting until a good root system has been accomplished Good luck..
