I just tilled in a crop of buckwheat and will try solarizing my patch soon (not growing this season). I'm debating whether to use 2 mil. or 4 mil. clear plastic. I know the 2 mil. will heat the soil better and is cheaper but the 4 mil. is a lot less likely to rip. Any thoughts? Thanks, Charlie

4 mil clear... You are correct that 2 mil will rip. make sure you have sufficient mosture in the soil before you cover it. We put soaker hose under our plastic.

I used 4 mil plastic and my drip irrigation is under it. If you go to Home depot they sell 10 ft x 200 ft rolls (4 mil) for about $35. I was able to make 3 hoop houses and cover 1000 sq ft (25 x 40). It is working pretty well too. Just remember it's not perfect and you will still have a few weeds that have to be hand picked. I just cut away where the plant is growing and leave the rest on to keep killing the weeds. Mark

I missed that your just solarizing this pacth and not growing in it. The info about Home Depot though should help. I thought that was a very reasonable cost!

Clear plastics as heavy as you can find. It will degrade in the summer sun. Also better results by allowing an air pocket between the plastic and the soil.
