Subject: Males with leaves?

I have two plants that have male flowers with leaves on the male flowers. What causes this?

Wow. That's strange. I wonder what they would do if they were allowed to grow without snipping them off. I'm not suggesting you do that. Just curious.

Its on two plants, side by side, one is a squash, the 611.5* Gadberry, the other a pumpkin, the 667 Kline. It has just happened over the weekend. Or atleast I didn't notice it until today and I was in the patch everyday except yesterday, so since friday morning.

Does anyone know what the cause of this is? Genetic? A nutrient imbalance?
