I have my 848 about 600 sf but still don't set the fruit because ever them aborted, yes, we have had some day with hot temps, but also when the temps was don't so hot, the pumpkins aborted to the melon dimension, now I will try in to set one in secodary vine, and wait one more in the mine, but I'm so anxious How I can do? Any advice will be very highly Thanks Sergio

I would try to keep the female shaded and cool all the time ... from the time you first see it -through pollinate and then from on.

It's my experience with squash that this kind of aborting happens much more than with pumpkins. I've had many squash plants through the years that abort at the softball to basketball stage...some never producing mature fruit at seasons end. Stellpflug lines come to mind (especially the 653.5). I don't know why this happens. It doesn't appear to be temp related as they grow for a few weeks before going down and the pumpkins are fine. Growth rates are good during this time as well with no signs of problems....until day 10-14 and they stop for no reason.
My only advice is to pollinate all females that appear regardless of where they are located and hope one takes.
I just lost my first female on the 848 (never opened) and am wondering if this problem is going to happen again. I remember many females wouldn't open on these plants as well.
If anyone has answers as to why they abort (not heat related I believe), please let me know. Alan

Have had this as an ongoing prblm...fruit seem to set and then abort...anyone else have abnormally high Boron levels in their soil test results? Peace, Wayne

My Boron levels were always low to medium during those squash growing years. Soil tests showed what I would call a balanced soil. Fruit would abort during hot and cold years in a similar fashion....and always when you felt safe..beyond softball size. Source of pollen didn't seem to matter either.
My original response was more along the lines of comparing the difference between pumpkins and squash with aborting (haven't grown squash in 15 years). And since I'm trying the 848 this season, wondering if I'm going to experience this problem again with the green like Sergio is.
It sounds like you guys are having the same problems with the orange. I get the feeling many on the East Coast won't have those late June pollinations due to this crazy weather this year. Hoping the next few weeks shows promise.

Dave my 781.5 Frantz is just like yours, the females aren't opening. I still think it is too much Nitrogen.
