Carl Yates is a good man. I got to know him because we share the same physical challenges growing (MS). He even grew my seeds last year. I'm numb right now.

I don't know Carl either, but it sucks to hear this kind of news about a fellow pumpkin grower. We consider all AG growers to be part of our extended family. Our thoughts & prayers go out to him & his family.

I wish him well and hope that he realizes that doctors don't know everything. When my father was 35 he was told that he wouldn't see 40. He lived to be 65. My aunt was told she was terminally ill and lived another 20 years. I currently have a friend that has breast cancer. Three years ago she was told that she had 6 months to live. I hope that Carl is as fortunate as these 3 people. He and all of us should remember that each day we have is a gift to be enjoyed. Jody

My prayers are with Carl and his family! Tell him to stay positive and keep fighting - though he already is a champion at that, growing GPs with MS!!
If Duke can't help him - tell him to come over here to Vanderbilt!! He can come and visit us and sit happily watching 25 GP/GS plants growing... And spout off as much advice as he likes!!

The Pumpkinhood is comprised of folks who engage in a Labor of Love. We don't spend hundred or even thousands of dollars & spend 100's or 1000's of hours tending a plant for financial reward. We do it because we derive pleasure making other people happy. Who doesn't love the feeling they get when a child smiles at the massive Labor of Love you tended all summer? Carl did last year when folks drove from all over North Carolina to see his Giant Pumpkin.
I just got off the phone with Carl. He's made peace with himself & his Maker. Carl has the support of a wonderful family. In 3 weeks he'll start a 6 week chemo treatment at Duke so the plants he has started are on their own for 9 hot NC weeks at least. He doesn't want folks running in trying to tend them since there's no telling whether he'll be up to going out in the patch.
He would like to unload an Agro-K Program that won't be used. He's not looking for full payment but would rather a new grower who's not able to afford the full program maybe pay half the principal & enjoy a good year of growing.
Carl is a not-so-computer-savvy 100% full blooded member of the Pumpkin Brotherhood. He is overwhelmed by the camaraderie that exists among growers & is sincerely touched by everyone's wishes & Prayers.

Before being diagnosed with MS Carl was into restoring antique tractors which is another labor of Love. So he took to growing Giant Pumpkins since he could do that. Folks in North Carolina thought he was nuts wanting to grow a 500 lb pumpkin. But that didn't phase him. His latest labor of Love netted him a 320 lb Pumpkin last year & new friends that are greater then gold. The Internet & BP has extended this Pumpkinhood beyond the State & National borders.
It would take him all day to type this so I decided to do it for him. God Bless Carl & his family & all the Pumpkinhood who are able to support him through this.
Email me & I'll call Carl if someone is interested & qualified to take the Agro-K. I'm sorry but bottom feeders of unknown integrity need not apply. Carl wants someone who NEEDS the program to USE & ENJOY it. The Pumpkinhood is like that you know.
Carl, I'm sorry if I've said too much but these folks understand. We're not interested in sympathy...just understanding & smiles.
It's like that Nanny who said "When you need me, but do not want me, then I will stay. When you want me, but do not need me, then I have to go."
