I am hoping to get some advice, I have a small pumpkin about 18 ft. out, have 5 lobes, all my others thus far have had four so I had high hopes for this one. But my problem is that the pumkins stem comes for beneath the vine. Should I give up on this one? Or is this something that can be dealt with simply by severing roots from beneath the vine? thanks KathyT

Ever here of a "Stelts 90". It is a method of growing that when you run into one of these situations. That in the heat of the day when things are most pliable. You turn your main vine 90 degrees to take care of this problem. As always when you do this you have to weigh your options.

Shannon,
Are you saying to twist the main vine? What is the success rate on this maneuver?

When making the outside "S" move you are always rolling the vine somewhat...if done in the heat of the day the last two feet are usually agreeable...if it's a double or flat keep working it well before..

I have read alot about moving the vine and not the pumpkin, is that now the accepted means of dealing with the pumpkins angle to the vine? Is that what is being described above?

Kathy, Im going to try the Stelts 90 this year for the first time, Gordons diary talked me into doing it this year, before I was to chicken of snapping the vine. I practiced on secondaries and didnt break not one. Hope I can say this when I do it on my main in a couple days, lol.
(let your first two secondaries grow out a little further then you normally do just so you can practice on em.)

Do I need to help my pollinated pumpkin lay over on to the ground. They are 2 days old and sitting straight up. Thanks Kenny
