Subject:  AG - Fastest growing thing on earth?

I have often wondered if the AG's grown by our super growers are faster growing (daily growth) than anything else on earth. For example the 1432 Carlson / Peterson was very huge at a very young age. If memory serves it was growing atleast 50 lbs a day at its peak growth. Could pumpkins like this and other giants (1446, 1420, 1469) have achieved daily growth that exceeds anything else on earth? The Blue whale is the largest mammal / animal on Earth now and maybe largest ever to inhabit the earth. I did a quick look on the net and found where it says that blue whale calves can gain 50 lbs a day. Are we to the point that we can confidently say that Atlantic Giant Pumpkins are the fastest growing thing on Earth? Wouldnt that be cool! Can anyone else think of anything other than a blue whale that may stand a chance at competing with an AG in Max daily weight gains?

My "ex" wife did for a few months,,then topped out b4 the family court commissioner granted that I wasn't required to pay any "feed" support.

heh heh.......

Actually these plants amaze me everyday with growth,,the leaves, vines, root bases......hopefully my fruit will too!!

Not in weight but in height/length it is exceeded by some species of bamboo. Record growing bamboo can grow up to 3.5 feet per day. Many grow an inch per hour. Bamboo is considered the fastest growing vegetation on earth.

I have herd that the species of kelp we use for sea weed fertilizers is the fastest growing organizm on earth. Hard to measure in lbs per day while under water though!

I would have to go with bamboo. Bambusa oldhamii can grow as much as four feet in a single day.

Then how's about the "per seed" selling price record? $550 for a single seed must be a record of some sort.

IF AG's aren't the fastest growers in vine length, the weight gains must put us close to some record.

If my calculations are correct, that should mean that somebody will grow a pumpkin the size of a blue whale some time soon. :-)

As far as selling price goes I think there was a time when a single tulip bulb could cost several million dollars in today's terms.

A single grain, of soil, has millions, of bacteria. They can grow ten fold even hundreds fold when conditions are right within hours. The same is true, of fungi spores.

docgipe, that is true, but eventually you get to a point where there are so many bacteria that they smother themselves; they certainly aren't going to get anywhere close to beating any records for lenght of growth or weight of growth!

According to the "Kelpman" certain types of seaweed are the fastest growing plant that can gain 3 feet per day. Check it out at http://www.kelpman.com/index_files/kelp%20fertilizer.htm

I think Mike is talking weight wise. Length and size I think is Bamboo.

bamboo is a single stick growing up...measue all the secondary growth and I take bets that that AG plant put out six feet..on agood day even more.

A bamboo rhizome has many shoots, just like a pumpkin plant has many secondary's. Some timber Bamboo are 7 inches in diameter. I also think some Giant wild Grape vines and all kinds of Tropical vines could give AG and Bamboo a run for their money as far as plants. Giant Redwoods and Sequoia put on a lot of mass. As "Fruits" go with pounds per day I can't think of any other fruit that can compete with it. But there are all kinds of plants that can compete with AG vines. The fungus called Armillaria Ostoyae is the largest living thing on earth, but I have no idea how fast it grows. Mushrooms tend to grow real fast though. It's about 3.5 miles wide. So I will place my bet on the Honey Mushroom if you all will consider it's shrooms as the fruit of the fungus. lol

Don't forget certain invasive weeds.

Polygonum perfoliatum L. or Mile-A-Minute Weed

We have this nasty bugger here in CT.

If your taking in conciderations for secondarys than kelp may take title , I dive the channel islands-and some of these giant plants come up over 100ft & can even aproch 200ft & the bugs running around under them can be quite large as well -I caught crabs that were 38in claw to claw , not to mention snails over a ft tall,, & lets not forget that (one half) 50% of all oxigen in the world comes from kelp !!!

And (most) of the other 50% of oxigen in the world comes from all the pumpkin plants in mike frantz"s back yard & all the places he keeps them!!!

The fastest growing plant in the world is weeds, invasive or not. Weed one day and the next day they are right back. The fastest growing "thing" in the world is kids. One minute they are in kindergarten, the next they are starting college :)

I quess the largest thing grown from seed would be the giant sequoia trees , Imagine if our pumpkins grew for couple hundred years.
