That's what I have been battling with for the last 2, 3 years, Gary. Your idea of using CDs seems to work pretty good, but I don't have that many CD. You should take your own advice.

Try pulling an old VCR tape out of its case and tying 12" strands of the tape to the plant. The sun reflecting off the tape will frighten away the birds. This helped keep them away from my cherry trees.

Dad gum...........I've never seen this, to this extent if ever. It definately looks like birds or something chewing and pulling.

You can buy reflective tape at your local nursery that sort of looks like those silver rainbow lazer effected reflectors. They sell it as bird repellants. Also my Grandma just used lids from a steel can and hung those up as deflectors too......But sooner or later the bird figures it out and it doesnt bother them anymore. Aluminuim foil strips work too as the wind moves them about. Daisy BB guns work too oh I better not go there......

Diffently is a yellow finch I have them all the time but they never do leaf damage....I do have sparrows that eat my tender young lettuce and pea blossoms and doves that eat my strawberries and poke holes in my tomatoes....squirrels that break the entire sunflower head off and carry the whole thing to next if they can

yeah doc, the bird is in the pic, it isn't a big deal, just kind of wondering why?,
Thanks sunflower, I didn't put any up this year, because I killed my cherry tree (rototilling too close to tree) and don't have a real good spot by this sunflower to put up a CD, I don't think it is really hurting the plant too bad, just kind of annoying

could the bird problem be caused by insects. This is my thoery the birds may (on some occasions)dive bomb insects on leafs of plants and tear holes in the plants. This seems to be the cause of some bird problems.

No. Birds eat everything here in San Jose. Tomato leaves, basil, winter melon, watermelon, pumpkin, pepper, etc. All but corns, which they don't like for some reasons.
