A huge storm just came up. They say severe thunder storms, high winds and...HAIL! I don't even care if my car gets hit. I have insurance for that. What about the pumpkins?! Even if the the hail misses us, I still worry about the wind. How much wind can a plant take?

The force was with me! The worst of the storm passed. There was no hail. The wind was bad. I am at work. So my daughter has checked the patch for wind damage. All is well. I won't even have to water for a couple of days. We get these storms somewhat fast and furious. There is still a storm watch until 10:00PM, but the worst seems to be over.

The rain lasted about an hour. Then another storm cloud rolled in and it poured for another 1/2 hour. The second time hail hit the front of the house but not the back. We ended up with about 1 1/2 inch of rain. I guess I won't have to water today. My little patch managed to dodge hail earlier in the season too. Maybe I should name my pumkin Lucky.

Hail bad.... but mine has come back pretty decent, it just destroyed the first 5 feet of the vine....the best thing I did was run out and cover the tips with screens while getting pelted or I would of been done for the season. If you havent already check it out on
www.ColoradoPumpkins.com under the hail button. I should have new pics up soon on the progress after the hail....Im still gonna have a kin this year...In fact the new secondaries after the destruction grew at a phoenomial rate and are over 10' long......with females on em

Once it starts to hail, I won't go outside. I was outside once when big hail hit. They were about 3 inches in diameter. Those things leave bruises about 8 inches across. I was lucky to not get hit in the head before making it to the barn. A lady down the street once got her jaw broke in a hail storm. Those big ones are dangerous.
I am glad that your plants are recovering but please be careful in the hail.

I use to wear a football helmet and shoulder pads but it hit too fast to don the armour, but you are very right....It was a knee jerk decison that saved my season so far. Pics posted soon.
