Has anyone had experience using a patio umbrella as a canopy, and how do you keep it in the ground from winds?? I am so worried, first 100 + temps, now severe storms, most just south of us, but the winds just came through making the lights flicker, and ripping off my bedsheet I had as a canopy on my pumpkin. It is still pretty gusty out there, I am just hoping the worst is over, but we have a bad storm watch till 2 am.

Umbrellas go a flying real quick. They also cause damage as they travel with the winds. For another year consider wind breaks, by researching patch pictures, on this site.

If you really have to use one (I agree they will do damage to plants, cars, siding...) there is a piece you can buy that looks like a spring that connects to the bottom of the umbrella. They are used at the beach and work great in sand. They are sold wherever beach supplies can be had.
