I have a small dilemna, nothing major, but one that needs resolving nonetheless. I have three young fruit on my 670 Daigle plant. Two are on seperate secondary mains, and one is on the main at 14 feet. The two fruits on the main are both growing somewhat faster than the fruit on the main vine, however. One instinct tells me to go with the fruit on the main vine, that the difference will be made up later as the other fruits are removed. My other instinct tells me, "Go with the fastest growing fruit, even if it is on a secondary." You see, last year my largest pumpkin was grown on a secondary, even though on that same plant I had a pumpkin on the main...
Any advice about what I should do here? Suggestions and comments would be muchly appreciated.

I'd go with the one on the main. It will pick up as soon as you cut the others off.

Unless that side vine fruit is way up the christmas tree I wouldn't even consider it....plant dieback (if you get that there) really shuts down sidevine fruit while main viners seem to carry on.

We generally don't pollinate fruit on a secondary or second main unless there was a problem with the main (flat vine, broke off, whatever) therefore we basically only grow pumpkins on the main. Sherry

Good point, "LIpumpkin". Right now the main vine is still growing, making it a sink, but the main secondaries have already been pinched off. That means that, right now, all of the energy of the secondary main is only going into one sink, which might explain the faster growth. The main vine is still growing and supporting numerous secondaries, which would explain why the pumpkin on the main isn't growing quiter as fast. I don't mind cutting off the larger, faster growing pumpkins on the secondaries, but I definitely want to get advice about it before I rush into anything.

must i ALWAYS have the dissenting opinion? seems to be the case with me lately, lol... i had a 632.5 in '02 i think it was, on the 845 Bobier, and i cut the main vine fruit off @ 421 pounds Est. BeCaUsE the one on the secondary (632.5) was growing faster. so, who knows how heavy the 421 Est. would have become had i left it on the main vine. either weigh i made out okay. just an example, no real suggestion here. g'luck! eric
