Aaaurgggh! I have borers in my vines. I see frass, but I don't thinks its progressed too far. I guess my insecticide program was not enough. What's the safest way to help the plant? Extraction? Inject nematodes? Inject Bt? Help!!!!

Thanks,
Jamie

Alright, the infestation is bigger than i thought. I probably have 10- 15 borers I need something drastic. What will kill the borers in the vines? The borers are still small. A few questions- if the borers are young (perhaps a few days since hatching) How far can they have wandered away from the entry holes? Will large scale cutting of the vine for extraction kill the plant? Can Bt be applied systemically? How and where do you inject Bt? Sorry to sound so frantic, but that's what I am. I feel awful for not preventing these things in the first place. Is my season over?

Jamie, get some merit and squirt it in the vine, or if you cant get merit try the Bayer tree and shrub insecticide it has Merit init. Goota get in inside the vine though. As far as how much to mix with water on a situation like this I dont know, hopefully Tremor will chime in.

Topsfield, Ma.

Jamie,I've used a syringe for kids ear drops purchased over the counter at the local drug store to administer Sevin right into the borer hole w/great success in the past.
Maybe Merit would be a better solution? Good luck, Duff

Thanks Brooks and Duff. Brooks, Bt is a bacteria that targets and kills svbs and other caterpillars without plant damage. I injected some today. I will follow your advice and hope for the best.

Thanks, Jamie

Goodish news: The Bt, extraction, and drowning methods we used did in about 3/4 of the buggers. One more question- (Tremor?) will insecticides like sevin or merit actually kill the Bt (a bacteria)? As long as the insecticide works though, I'm not concerned about the Bt.

Thanks, Jamie

Hey, I just bought some Bayer tree and Shrub since I could not find Merit. I am going to inject it into the vine and do a soil drench. Hope it works! Anyone know the dilution ratio?
