Just wondering, if most folks cover the actual pumpkin or just shade it. I think I read somewhere that some people cover it with sheets. Do you take them off? I have a sweet shade built over it, and no sun gets in, but not sure about why anyone would cover the actual fruit....any ideas?

with a cover over it it doesn't look like a giant lunch to a woodchuck.

I agree with Glenn, on one reason to cover with a cloth.
A shade tarp can prevent hail damage. The last two years, and so far this year, I've only covered with a cloth(or sheet) of some sort. I've used white, or some light color.

We cover ours with carpet padding and have nothing else over the pumpkins. We do no overhead watering so they don't get wet. We uncover them once a day and let them air out, spot check pumpkins and look at the stems. This is our second year with this method and it worked well last year. It gets pretty cool here at night(60 to 65 degrees) since we are by the coast so I think it helps keep the pumpkins warm too.

My two cents worth.........I use the shade house plan and keep a single thickness sheet on it as well. I remove the sheet at night and during a long damp high humidity period.

Two years ago I had a coon eat through a canvas carrying tarp.

There are some scent based critter chasers. I employ them and trust them more that just a sheet, to fool 'em.
