I have cut the roots under my main vine and gently supported it on things such as beer cans and a little tupper ware type box. The pumpkin is growing so fast that the vine keeps pulling above my support.
Do I continue to give it full support along the main vine and the stem of the pumpkin? Look at my diary for a better explaination. I do not want to snap a stem off of my pumpkin due to a rookie mistake. VETERANS PLEASE HELP. Thanks.

i use the same knee high nylons that i cover flowers with. just drive a stake in the ground and tie it up. they are very elastic and soft on the vine.

Steve's idea of using the nylons is good. Another way to hoist that Main Vine up is to use lengths of 1/4 inch nylon rope with water pipe lagging/insulation tubing slid over the rope to act as a cushion between Vine and rope. As the Pumpkin grows, and the Vine rises, just adjust the tension on the rope bt tying the end of the rope to a hook or nail on the posts.

Looks like I will be going through my wifes lacey drawer tonight. heh heh.
Looks like a good idea, thanks.
If I do not support that vine, where can I expect a break, on the vine or the pumpkin stem?

i am sure there are a few crazy people that actually DO use fish nets to some degree in their private lives. they are a bit TOO devoted to their hobby, lol.... anyway, if someone such as myself were to come up with an idea like.....how about a post that you stick in the ground that has a small pulley on it at the top, and then you tie a string around the vine with some cushioning (i was thinking of using a hol(e)y sock, tied onto the supporting string.... anyway, the string goes over the pulley, down the other side of the stake, where you would have a small basket attached to the other end of the string. in the little basket or durable bag you could place heavy items such as nuts and bolts or even fill something with water, anything heavy. the WHOLE PURPOSE of this idea is to provide a CONSTANT tension on the vine pulling upward. set it and forget it. in 2001 i used a 1" X 1" X 4' wooden post, and there was a drywall screw at the top which i had a piece of copper wire's end wrapped around it. at the other end of the wire, wrapped around the vine, was an old sock. every other day or as necessary, i would warp some more of the wire around the screw. seemed to work well.
