I've observed a strange pattern since Fri/Sat (We received 2" of rainfall then)..... Not a SINGLE leaf/plant is wilting even in these extreme temps!!!!

Yes, the ground is still quite saturated underneith the mulch layer. Plus, the ground is staying fairly 'cool' and stable in temp as well.

I've also noted that there seems to be a decline in 'heat aborts' this week. Have many more making it to softball/volleyball now. And I didn't think they could grow any faster - but I'm hacking off sidevines like mad right now! Swear they're growing 4' per day since last week!

Although I do NOT like the ground this saturated, since this in itself could cause problems - obviously the GP/GS didn't read that book and prefer 'root swimming' in these high temps.. **grin**

I noticed the same. We had over 4" in the week before the 100+ heat index hit. Very little wilting the first few days. When the soil started drying I got some wilting but running the sprinklers stopped it. I think that as long as they have a surplus moisture supply, they can transpire enough water to make their own natural cooling. I also noticed exceptional growth on at least one pumpkin. So far it is running just a little ahead of the Carlson/Petersen 1432's growth rate. I'm just hoping it doesn't split.
