Cold up in middle Maine already.

Down into the upper 40's & low 50's tonight even here.

Is anyone covering up yet?

What do you mean 'cold'? That's a normal night for us in the PNW. I consider 55 degrees a warm, "pumpkin growing night"! No blankets yet, but I have doubled up on the sheets.

Jim,

It's a mighty large shift from avarage & pumpkins typically don't like a lot of flux. I hear some PA guys saw a sharp drop in growth after getting caught with a cold one last week.

My growth dropped like a rock after a few nights in the high 30's last week. The night time temps are in the 40's and 50's now and the growth has pcked up, but the past two years I've had pumpkins split 7-10 days after the cold spells. I'm sitting on pins and needles now.

Calling for 44 here tonite in Jericho. Blankets already on at 6:30 pm. Another almost inch of rain last night with thunderstorms. Not good to be a pumpkin grower in Jericho VT this yr. LOL Next year - giant waterlillies (probably to cold and wet for them too)

May be gun shy but my blanket went on this evening. I too took a hit, on the two cold days last week. It warmed up and so did the grow. The cold week still averaged over twenty pounds a day due, to one 32 lb. day.

I hear you Steve, typically our differential out here from day to night is 30-40 degrees, sometimes more in the Fall. That's why we need so many days to compete with you guys.

I'd just like to know when I can take the stinkin' down comforter off! I read today that the average temperature for Sequim in July was 66.1 F. Personally, I think that's a bit on the warm side. . .

We start with sheets and add blankets as the pumpkins out grow the sheets. I put a nice floral comforter on my 1068 last night, had cat scratches on it so wanted to protect it from them. Glad I did, last night it cooled down and have rain today.

Wow...coming off a heat wave such as we just had this isn't encouraging. Pumpkins will be all mixed up.

Come on do blankets really help? It's cold and the pumpkins stop growing.

Yes Laura....the fruit get quite warm during the day. Keeping that heat IN the fruit longer is better. On a cold night the heat will be lost very quickly. The next morning a temperature difference of a couple degrees *COULD* mean the difference between a good growth day & a fatal blow-out.

Thick comforter for the next few nights- things will be warming up a bit again by next week. It was 44 F when I got up this morning. Not thinking about taking my shade structure down...there's still plenty of hot days to come.
