Any reason why you couldn't/shouldn't winch a pumpkin into the bed of your pickup?

I used a Harbor Freight hydraulic crane (mounted in the truck bed)last year, it worked but sure was scary! Anything in the 500+ lb range sure gave it a workout.

Any nontraditional loading/unloading thoughts out there?

Instead of your hydraulics, try mounting a chain hoist on your pickup. You can usually pick up a good one at an auction sale.

Since there aren't many pumpkin growers in my neck of the woods. Well... within 45 minutes. My dad and I are the only ones to move some 700 and 800 pounders. Last time I checked I wasnt able to move an 800 pounder. So, what we have are board ramps that attach to the back of the truck bed. Then, we put logs undernieth the boards to give them some support. Next the pallet that the pumpkin is on, BEFORE the pumpkin is PUT ON, we nail runners on the bottom. The runners are nothing more than boards to make the bottom of the two ends of the pallet smooth. The pallet is then lifted a small amount so that a metal pole can be pushed under. Then the pallet is pushed about a foot and another pole is put under the pallet. This is done as the pumpkin and pallet are pushed up the ramps and onto the bed of the truck. Just be careful as the pumpkin will seem like it weighs like a million pounds as the pallet nears the bed of the truck. My dad came up with this idea and it somewhat is similiar to the egyptians and the block moving. Good luck.

Great Idea CowD. Last year I used 4X8 sheets of particle chipboard and made a punkin highway. I couldnt believe I could shove a 425 palleted pumpkin by myself........ now lifting it was a whole different story into my Dodge Diesel....Ouch
