My 898 gave way today to a small 1/2 inch split. What I need is an idea of what to patch it with to give a good try to get to 1000 pounds. The crack/split/opening is small, and on a rib. What is the best patch material to get another week or two out of her before I cut her up for some seeds and weigh her?
Thanks for all the support. I am down to my 500 pounder on my 1354 now. The 898's measurments yesterday were 152-93-93=338"OTT or 823 lbs. With the seed/plant being an 898, I am hoping for some overage and the 1000 pound mark. I will try to get 1 - 2 weeks more out of it then weigh it. Pictures to follow in my diary soon.

Latex caulk or I've used duct tape to seal the split. The trick is to get it closed up asap before it breaths too much outside air....

Try using some marine silicone (the kind used for sealing holes and cracks in fiberglass boats)
Good luck with it...shame indeed!!

I am no expert on this but, I wonder if they go down fast after they get a split or pin hole is because of the air that gets inside of the pumpkin. Maybe someone would have an idea as to vacuum seal it,(suck the air out) then chaulk it.....

The best thing I have found is grafting wax. It sticks very very well and will stretch quite a bit if the crack expands.

I was thinking grafting wax also. I have one that has developed a 4" crack. I have been cleaning it and stuffing with captan and then running a fan over it, but wax was going to be my next idea. So far it looks like the captan has stopped it. I also cut way back on water.

Sorry to hear it Rocky. I went with grafting wax on my 923 dmg. a few years ago. When it opened up it was estimated at 770 pounds and it made it to 923. You may hit that 4 digit mark. Sponge Bob also sends his condolences.

I agree with the grafting wax. A crapper toilet wax ring about $4.00 has great sticky wax as it's filler. It stands up to thousands of flushes and all kinds of fat butts rocking on it. Should be a great option easy to find.

Rocky...what i did last year was clean the area(s) of concern with alcohol and sealed with clear silicone....my 1186 split at 978 est on aug 19th and grew a tad over 200 lbs up until weighoff...when opened...no rot what so ever...split was about the size of your pinkie finger. The silicone worked just fine. casey
