I have seen at the patches of a couple "Master" growers...that they have removed the dirt from on top of their vines near the stump...they flushed it off with the water hose leaving the tops of the vines and the top tap root to air dry...probably 6 to 8 ft up the main and a little down the first few laterals....Is it time yet? Do you spray with a dose of fungicide?....a little captan to keep fungal problems from starting? Please Advise...Pumpkinson

I had to uncover my secondaries , alot of them started turning brown and I lost one plant because of it and another plant I lost the stump and mostly all the main vine, its now only growing on secondaries.
I used straight compost this year and cooked my vines because the compost wasnt done cooking, looked done, but it wasnt. Next year Im covering with straight dirt from my patch. Never again will I cover with straight compost. Larry Checkon saved my plants this year by telling me not to cover my vines with compost, so I went out and uncoverd every vine that had compost on them and just in the nick of time to. Im lucky I only lost one plant.

With such a wet early summer this was NOT a good year for full vine burying (Fusarium). Rather I feel that just burying nodes is safer. Roots don't grow between nodes but Fusarium does. The days of burying vines to prevent borers is all but gone since we now have effective insecticide programs to prevent them.
