I looked at my pumpkin and near the canopy, all the leaves seemed to be dying. As I look closer I saw powdery mildew. I was wondering, should I just spray, or should I also remove all the infected leaves?? Where should I put the leaves, way out in the field??

Ok, I just trimmed off the couple dead ones I saw and left everything else. I sprayed with draconil. Hope this is good stuff.

Daconil is a good preventive (contact) fungicide but once Powdery Mildew gets going you're better off using a systemic fungicide like Eagle/Nova (myclobutanil).
Interesting observation today: We've been growing AGs at my son's elementery school for several years now. We ALWAYS get a major case of PM there due to the fully enclosed walled garden. I don't use any chem, icals there at all so PM usually runs rampant.
This year (except for last week) I sprayed a 10% solution of MILK every week since June.
NO POWDERY MILDEW at all!
Go figure.

Hmmm, I will have to keep that in mind for next year.

Agree with Tremor. 4 without milk have PM, one with milk, no PM at all.

Here's a link to a study done on the use of milk for PM. I wish I would have tried it this year !!!!

Originally it was thought that the type of milk mattered. A few years ago I had a published paper that stated only whole unprocessed straight-from-the-cow milk would work.
This was not correct.
I have been using whatever is in the refrigerator (usually 2%) or whatever is easiest to reach in the deli near the school.
I've also sprayed the 10% milk solution at high-noon at temperatures as high as 88°F with no negative results. I never thought I'd be saying this but I will definately be using milk for PM from now on.

I'm wondering if milk absorbed by the leaves would add to the calcium content of the pumpkin?

Hey - I used milk today on my leaves and we shall see what happens, the pm has taken quite a hold in my patch. It seems as though some plants have a higher tollerance against it but this year has been a good year for it to manifest- hot & humid but not much rain. I used powdered milk that a man from church gave me. I hope it works :)

Half & Half dairy creamer works great. Use one part dairy creamer to eight parts of water. Kills powdery mildew.

The calcium in milk is NOT available to plants. All we're doing is making a barrier on the leaves that is toxic to the Powdery Mildew.

I heard from folks in Germany that cut the vines then place the ends in milk. They swear by it enhancing growth although I havent tried it.......Thoughts on this?
