My fruit is on display now, in a nice air conditioned store. The pumpkin is extremely healthy and sound, but the stem is succombing to rot slowly. About 3 spots on it still are still geting wet, one about 1/2 an inch from where the pumpkin meets the stem. I tried stopping the rot by cutting it out, sterilizing the area and then putting some sulfer to dry it out, but to no avail, it is slowly kreeping more. My question is, is this a danger to the pumpkin too or just the stem? I have hopes the fruit lasts a long time for display and halloween, but it's looking iffy with the stem rot. Any thoughts? Thanks, Jim

You might get away with it,the stem on this one rotted away completely and the pumpkin lasted til Halloween. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=15099

Hi Jim!! Two years ago I cut a 723 pounder in the third week in October but wanted to hold it until New Year's Day. The stem went soft and I was afraid that it would creep right into the pumpkin so I cut ALL of the soft stem out, put a fan on it and sprayed with a bleach solution every few days. It held until after Jan. 1st!!! Just a suggestion.
Good Luck!
