I have a styrofoam placement under my pumpkin. When I would measure OTT, I would measure side to side and end to end by starting at the surface of the styrofoam, over the pumpkin, and then to the other side meeting at the surface. Once the pumpkin outgrows the styrofoam, it seems to be more difficult. I wondered if you just hang the tape over where it is and then deduct an inch, or whatever the thickness of the styrofoam, or would it matter? At the stem end I can't slide an extra styrofoam under because it seemed to grow to the ground anyway after expanding. Should I deduct an inch off of that end or just forget about it as it is already touching the ground?? Thanks.

Herbie, once it overgrows the styro-foam just measure from ground to ground as the pumpkin is sure to fill out that way anyways. I would not fuss with deducting any measurements as you are only talking about a couple of inches anyways. Once you get it off the styro-foam and onto that certified scale...that is when it really counts.

Keep em growin'

I'd make the final measurements on a pallet. That way you can get accurate measurements and know the %heavy or light it went.
I, personally, would deduct the inch or so from the styrofoam, to get a fairly accurate measurement for your estimates, in the mean time.

I put insulation styrofoam 1" thick under my pumpkin that were 1 sq ft. When it outgrew that piece, I just added more 1 sq ft styrofoam underneath it. I also put a lot of sand underneath the pumpkin and above the styrofoam to support the pumpkin and it's weight. With all that styrofoam underneath mine I had no problems measuring.
