seeds from a split pumpkin so long as they are fully developed are just as good as any from another fully grown undamaged fruit.

the genetics that you developed with that 1068 x 522 cross is the only thing in question. could be the next 1068 or could be just a middle of the road pumpkin. planting several times will tell.

Keep all your seed and use them for trading this winter. Someone out there may take a shine to it and give it a try...you never know. It has been said that there are many many top seeds that just never see the dirt!
How big was she when she blew?
How many great pumpkins have been grown from 500 lbs pumpkins.I would recomened you get an official weight if you can
Just my thoughts

Always plenty of people looking for good genetic seeds during/after the weigh-offs...It's a recruitment time so the rest of us loonies feel good about getting the recruits addicted...LOL

I'd keep 'em Fissssh. There are some great genetics there. Based purely on genetics, I'd say it looks like a very nice cross. Maybe someone will give it a try. You could also use this seed for backup plants, if you'd like. You may get a chance to prove it then.

Glen,

There is no saying that a damaged fruit won't yield desirable seeds. Look at the 845 & 723 Bobier's (both UOW) for a couple prime examples of a seed that never got an official weight.

The thing today is that so many great crosses *DO* make it onto scales without splitting. Hence your cross might not see any time in the sun unless either *YOU* grow it yourself or you can lobby other good growers to push it along.

If your seed produces a few thousand+pounders next year then the world will inundate you with bubbles! LOL Grow it!

From another viewpoint.....

In animal and plant breeding there are many good examples where selecting against a certain trait has managed to reduce its incidence in a population. In AG growing should we not be selecting against splitting by not using seeds from pumpkins that split or were polinated by plants that also produced split pumpkins. There are also significant environmental factors such as watering and fertilisation that go to produce splits but there has to be a genetic component in the wall thickness and shape. We are unlikely to breed out splitting but I would think we could reduce its incidence. In the long run this would help to create big pumpkins if less of the large ones split...

Captain Sized.......You are right on. Any group that works together to do this should start seeing results worthy of note in just a few years. Getting the agreements and long term effort going for other than weight is the challenge.
