After knowing all that you know, and learning all that you've learned/learnt. Where would you choose as the most optimum pumpkin growing habitat/place to grow really big and huge pumpkins?

If amount of manure counts for anything...I'd pick Ted Kennedy's mouth!

Rhode Island. You can't argue with results. And the grower's network there would be awesome to be a part of.

Almost anywhere in northern USA & Canada. Not necessarily for weather conditions but just to be able to go down the road and buy all those great growers products that we could only dream of being able to get over here.

Regards & I wish i was over there.

bermuda is the place for me
grow year round ( ON THE SAME PLANT ?).
little to no humidity, frequent showers, grow a massive 1,200 sq ft plant before setting fruit.
oh ya, and a sack full of quality seeds to play with.

I think I'd be in pretty good shape if I was next door to any of the Rhode Island Boys.

My second choice would have to be Southeast Alaska. Just because I love that place.

I'll take Alaska at the place where I work.......no bugs, no native pumpkin soil fungus, you're there all day to jump in and fix "situations". Im not sure about mildew but I'll risk it...lol. Of course protection from the outside is mandatory and in some years they'll just be nothing too big, but in an enclosure like JD's you can control the environment. One plant, mostly full control...best seed in the hobby. Yup...I'm packing now........

Alaska equals 18 hours of dark in the winter...that sounds fun.

I'll stay right here in the Buckeye!! I moved to Florida back in the summer of '98 and I hated every minute of it!! It made me realize how much I really liked living here. I was moved back in 4 months!!

mike, i was thinking the same thing!! this question is tough, we seem torn over what the question really means. is the question "where do you think is the optimum growing place" or "where would you want to LIVE and grow". i know what she means so we should re-word the question as such:

Where would you grow pumpkins if you could zap yourself there and back in an instant?? (that way you could grow in the pacific northwest and still live in the buckeye with family LOL).

PS sorry for the complicated answer :)

I live in the PNW and I'm so convinced it's the best pumpkin growing climate. But, maybe I'm a little to far NW or too close to the P. I'm thinking Maui or St. John. If your pumpkins don't grow you still have pineapples and bananas.

That State Up North

I would make my picks based on climate, and how that affects pumpkin growth. Somewhere moderated, I like WA, or northern OR, but I have to believe there are better places, maybe south Island, NZ? I would need seasonal temperatures, humidity, and the average ammount of solar accumulation in the growing season. Also, base soil is a factor, especialy drainage. The better natural soil, and growing bed, the better, but that is more easily amended, and anywhere will take some amendment.
So, if there are any global weather trackers with good information, pass it along. I just moved somewhere I hope to find great pumpkin growing climate, but I will just have to try it and find out.
(low native pests and disease is also good, but moving where there are less people usualy helps, and there is always methyl bromide and furydan, and cyanide for the people)

Right besides Jack LaRue's, Steve Daletas, Jerry Rose or Al Eaton's place. Either of these would do. I think maybe Al Eaton's more because he's still in Canada. If I lived in the US, I like to move next door to any of the others though.
