Last year when we moved our 400lb pumpkin we taped down some carpet padding to the pallet and placed the pumpkin on it. It seemed fine and moved fine. This year our pumpkin is heavier-@500lbs. My hubbie is concerned that the pumpkin will stick to the padding and that carpet pad isn't thick enough. ( We need to move the pumpkin @20 miles) He thinks we should put down plywood first and then the padding. What do you do? Is it important to add the plywood? What kind of padding do you use?

1/4" plywood or paneling is perfect for sliding the punking off onto the scales. Putting foam under the fruit wont make your lifting crew happy as the foam holds the fruit in place. Carpet is cool if you staple it down on top of the plywood.

I placed 1" foam/rigid insulation on the pallet and covered it with a fiberglass type tarp. Padding for the pumpkin, ease of movement for lifting crew, and easy cleanup with the hose when all's done. Should last a few seasons anyway!

I use 4-6" foam padding. Old mattras foam or discarden sopha cussion padding works well. When the pumpkin is straped down it keeps if from bouncing while traveling down the road

all you need is 1. a skid 2. a half bale of straw or hay. 3. a 8x10 tarp or old blanket to wrap around the straw and make into a pillow to lay on top of pallet.
( a piece of rug or thin foam is not near enough padding for the open road. a good bump and your pumpkin could crack)

Good info Tug, Being less than a mile from the scales at Topsfield, I don't have many worries. I'll bulk up on the padding for the trip to RI with my 500 Wallace offspring...should be a shoe-in for the ugliest...LOL!
