Since there will be 4-5 rows of 5-8 GPs/GSs in the rear patch next year... I've decided that a multitude of other environmental factors could be studied in conjunction with the long term color genetics study... In each of these rows there will be at LEAST 2-3 varieties grown that are from the same inbred 'kins. These will be the plants we will watch the most - to see about the environmental factors...

The first thing I will look at - is I'll take Roger's advice with 1/2 of them - and use 3-5 males to pollinate each female. The other 1/2 will be pollinated with just 1 male - as I've been doing... Roger has a theory that the abortions will be fewer with the multi-male pollination technique..

The other item to be studied - will be the use of different types of mulches on each row. One row I will use the barn waste that I've used for two seasons so far.... I need ideas for 3-4 different types of mulches to use on the other rows. Must be of reasonable cost.. Records of diseases, pests, soil moisture levels, final 'kin weights, etc.. will be kept on the diary.. This experiment should shed some light on the best mulches to use...

Sounds like you got a great plan! Please post your findings and results. I'm very interested in knowing what you come up with!

Laura,
Good idea's, keep going in your science.

I discovered some seeds leftover of sisters of my multy colour squash 917Ghaye04, last year given by Jos Ghaye.
If you still are intersted send me a bubblemail.

I've always been curious of the fate of traceable dyes & their fate in the vascular system. Radio Isotopes were injected into C. Pepo a few years ago to measure the SPEED of vascular transport. What the growing community needs here at BP is to confirm the "sink - source" relationship theory that says the plant will *FIND* whatever sinks exist & back or front feed it depending on the need.

In other words, some of us want to prove that the vine after the fruit can back-feed the fruit.

I believe the plant is capable of sensing the loss of photosyntate producing "source" & redirecting energy as long at it is capable. Hence chopping off the main close to the fruit will cause the vine after the fruit to reverse direction.

Ummm, Rog - as the Teenagers would say - Duh... Although I'm having the same Abort rates with the OP females (I quit hand-pollinating on Sep 1st - and FINALLY sleep in!!!)

Tremor, that sounds like an excellent item to look into, especially for a chemmist like yourself!

Theo, yep, I still would like some seeds - will send all my SASBE's out later in the month.

Now I need ideas for different types of mulches that some of you guys have been using - and swearing by....

What i'll be studying this fall, and winter will be Soil, and genetics, and talk to alot of the old time farmers around here. There a treasure trove of info.
