Has anyone heard of using sap from a pumpkin applied to a surface crack to heal it? I've got a 1000 pound plus pumpkin that's threatening to go down with a crack, And Bruce Whittier told me that he heard that applying the sap from another pumpkin could stimulate healing. Does anyone know of any articles on this?

Well,
First congratulations on the size of the pumpkin. Second, it depends on the size of the crack. I have personally tried getting the sap from another pumpkin but it is hard to get a sizeable amount of the sap. I tried to put some on a blossom end problem but it didn't work out too well as the crack openned quicker than the sap could do anything. I hope that you dont have any trouble with those dill rings on your pumpkin.

So, I dont think that the sap will work very well unless the whole is small.

You can actually take a sharp knife or razor and cut into the stem side about 1/2 inch to make sap ooze out. I've made many cuts on the stem side to get sap. As long as the crack doesn't get to the core, or to the inside, it can heal, especially if it's healthy and that large. You could do the same with another pumpkin to get extra sap.I would apply it as the crack gets wider to keep air out of the pumpkin. As soon as outside air gets in the cavity it's done.

I tried this method in 2004 and it worked. I put on the sap and covered it with latex caulk. It got me through to the weighoff. It was a small crack a couple of inches off the blossom.
