I did a stupid thing while opening up our Beachy a few hours ago, I got sulphur powder on my hands. I went to a doc in the box and he said there isn't much to do about it except to hydrate my hand with lotion. Any tips out there? Or experience with this? My hands are pealing and red and a bit on the hot side. I've washed them ten times.

Maybe a different type than what I use cause I'v never had any problems from sulfer on my hands. Maybe it was on your hands too long? Anyway, i think you have washed enough, the hand creme sounds good. I like Neutrogena.

Likewise...never had a burn from sulfur. I would try Aveeno.

We were cutting apart our Beachy that had DMG. I think sulphur had mixed with the pumpkin guts. We were cutting up chunks and picking seeds out of the pumpkin for an hour or so. I didn't realize that the sulphur must have mixed with the guts and I had my hands covered that whole time. I called poison control and the guy said to wash my hands for 15 min.,and not to put hand cream on for 6 hours. He said the sulpher sort of binds to the skin and the oils from the creams help it soak down deeper and burn a little deeper. Now that some time has passed, my hands are almost done pealing and taking the lotion off and washing them for so long really did help. I sure don't want to do that again any time soon. I'll try the lotions tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

The sulfer powder can create a weak sulferic acid if it is in solution and mixed with the wrong things. Next time try washing with baking soda to neutralize the acid. I've never had a problem with dry sulfer powder.

believe it or not some peole have a similar allergic reaction to pumpkin guts. If you havent done what you did without sulfer involved I wouldn't rule a reaction out. If youve done the gutting etc chore before with similar rotting issues and not had a problem it might just be the sulfer. My hands get irritated by pumpkin guts...I know.

A few weeks back we cut open another of our DMG pumpkins just as it was rotting and my hands were fine after working the seeds out of the guts and cutting it up. I think I didn't notice the sulfur problem sooner because pumpkin guts always make my hands dry. The good news is today after giving them another good soaking, the layers of pealing skin are all off- no blisters, no burning but it was a little scary.
We picked up our two pumpkins from the County Fair tonight. What fun! On Saturday night, the Fair Board elected Riley to be a Grand Champion for his 630lb pumpkin grown off the 1180 Daletas. He and the other Grand Champions got to ride through the whole fair in a hay wagon and he receive an another big blue ribbon. We don't know for sure, but that may be his 15 min. of fame.
