I was at Ace the other day and they had a bunch of pumpkins getting ready to sell. These were not your typical Howdens though. Pretty much all of them had a very nice shape and carrot orange color. They were lightly ribbed. What made them different was that pretty much all of them were longer than they were wide. They were maybe 1 1/2-2 ft. tall and maybe about 10 inches to a foot wide. Anyone have a clue on what type it may be? It could be a hybrid of some sort. If so, planting the seeds may not give what the fruit looked like. They were only like $2 something, and thought about getting one. Not sure yet. Kinda early still.

Sounds similar in shape to the 572 Moore I grew last year.. I got one 300lb, one 200lb, and one 160lb - BIG deep orange Footballs... So there is a genetic connection - but unless you talk to the individual who grew them, you won't know if they were hybrids or not.

I would think at that size, shape, and color, they are most likely a pepo species of pumpkin. One of the larger open pollinated or hybrid varieties.

They aren't that big. Maybe like 15 lbs. or so. I may pick one up tomorrow. I would have to have a hiding spot, or else my mom will kill me for bringing one home since I have "two of my own", why should I get anymore she says. They never understand. Oh well.
