I'm getting anxious about planting some winter rye. I just tilled under a crop of buckwheat, spread alfalfa meal and molasses yesterday. How soon can I plant a crop of winter rye? Want to make sure I don't plant too late. I live in central Illinois. Thanks, Charlie

Now would be good. Best to get some roots established before the grownd freezes in Novemeber. By the time the rye germinates and starts growing the stuff you tilled in will have settled out a bit. Double plant the rye if possible for a better catch it's running $5/100lb here right now.

I paid something like 95 cents a pound for annual rye from local farm supply store.

Gosh! Where are you all getting yours??? It's right around $30 per 50lb - at TSC, Co-op and Lowes.

I'm mixing it with equal parts of winter wheat & Oats. With just a dash of a clover mix. I've had better luck getting a mix going good, than just trying a single species.

Winter rye is a secondary crop in this area for potatoe farmers, therefore very low prices at the farm for non-certified seed.

I plant mine the last week in October frost or no frost and always have plenty of rye come up by May (10") to mid-May (12" or more). It grows all winter especially on sunny days when it's warmer but haven't had frost or sub-zero kill it yet. I plant about 10 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. scattered on the surface of tilled ground and cover it with 1/4-1/2" of soil.

Do you all have problems with it being a problem during growing season. Ive been thinking about this in our Colorado patches but have never planted a cover crop. How advantageous is it???

My farmer friend gave me half a bag of feed grade seed. It all grows. The seed grades are very expensive. My cost is the best deal.
