As I started late this year and only grow them for practice and experience its really not a big deal. But. I'm wondering if I suffered a rabbit attack? One morning 4 small pumpins, varying in weight from 1 to 4 lb had scratch marks all over them. Some had even lost chunks to the scratching. My first thought was the neighbours cat - but somehow I find it hard to believe that the cat would go for four pumpkins. I figure he would loose interest after one. My wife suspects that there are wild rabbits here, and I begin to belive her.
Questions. You think its a rabbit? And if yes, what do I do to keep them out of the patch?
  Take care!

my guess would be a coon, Ive seen rabbits chew the bottoms of my leaf stocks and leave nice holes in them before, but never enough to totally destroy a plant or a pumpkin that Ive grown. But could be possible that a rabbit did your pumpkins in.

Ask the North Shore Boyz... might be squirrels looking for moisture.

Mark is lucky. It took me a whole season to figure out what was eating mine and it was rabbits. Rabbits leave a small, half-moon bite about the size of your little fingernail. They will eat anything that is yellow. You need to be careful with extension cord colors--they have eaten through my yellow extension course. They try to bite through the plastic on my cloche. That being said, if it scratches and they are within a few inches of the bottom, you are probably looking at the results of mice teeth. In the last couple of weeks they have started eating all the vegetables in the garden including my field pumpkins and a few AG's. They are trying to fatten up for winter. Put some bait stations out.

(btw - you also will save gas and not need your tiller anymore!)
