Tonight to slow the growth more, I decided, I would cut the vine the smaller pumpkin was on, the one that has been getting splits. I figured I would leave the other side of the vine, so it can get stuff up from the tap roots on the other side still. Well, I shoulda checked first 'cause I cut it off, and then went to the other side, and the vine isn't even rooted in the ground, it has even been cut short from earlier on pruning. Soooo, now it isn't "hooked up" to anything, and just sitting there. Bad me. We decided to go ahead and weigh it tomorrow. Would it be ok if we store it in our pole barn?? Then again, it isn't all that ripe yet, so would it be ok outside?? Or will it rot quickly? Any suggestions?

Maybe you could cover the remaining vine, water it well, and hope it roots soon.

It would take a little "juice" away from the pumpkin, but at least you could get some roots from this vine to keep it fresh untill you want to pick it.

It is a fruit. I say if it is not connected and you cannot get it to re-root you may need to keep it in your refrigerator until you need it where it is cool and dry but not frozen. My pumpkins usually last from mid September to just before Haloween but are pretty ripe by then. It was funny last year watching the kid stick his foot through my pumpkin only to sink to his knees in rotting, smelly slop.

I stored a 500lber in my garage for over a month. This time of year you can keep them outside. Just try to keep it dry.
