I been doing a lot of thinking about this 1354 Checkon and will be comparing soil tests with growers that grew the 1354 Checkon but even though a lot of people who grew this seed this year didn't get the weight they wanted I can say that mostly every grower that Ive talked to that grew the 1354 have never seen a pumpkin take off so fast and grow as big as it did so early the first 3 to 8 weeks. Mostly every grower I talked to that grew this 1354 pumpkin for the first month or two was certain a new personal best was just around the corner, I know I did.
Id like to figure out what to do at this later stage with this 1354. I do think this is a genetic thing but a genetic thing that can be fixed easy, My thinking is something is missing(Obviously). I think that this pumpkin needs MORE of something then the norm,like more of what a regular ag needs to get big. Maybe the PH needs to be 7.7 or higher or calcium needs to be extra high and so on. These Atlantic Giants are changing each year so why wouldn't there feeding habits as well? But I myself really believe this 1354 needs more of something to keep that pace growing in the later 2 month stage of its growth.Im talking like more then another AG pumpkin would need at the exact same stage in its growth.
You think Im way off Base on this theory? Maybe Joe Jutras had that extra something on his 1354 Checkon that he grew to 1169 this year, but then again maybe he didnt.

Its kinda hard to explain what I mean when saying this 1354 might need that extra something more of something, I'm sure you could say that about every pumpkin you grow I guess, but this 1354 is different, its a lot different then any pumpkin I have ever grown, you will see what Im talking about if you grow it.

A semi kinda close example would be like the 1068 Wallace seed. This pumpkin starts out slow, almost so slow growers give up on it, but once it hits the middle stage of its growth it kicks in the turbos and doesn't look back. Whats your guys theory on something like this?

Joe Jutras brought his 1354 fruit to Penfield this year.

It taped:

S-S = 101"
E-E = 101"
Circ = 169"
OTT = 371"
EST = 1069 lbs.
ACTUAL = 1169 lbs so 9.35% heavy

CArlson and Petersen grew a 1354 checkon this year and the plant was one of the slower ones in the patch and also was on the smaller (vine size) then most of the others..BUT it did set fruit easily and grew a very nice fruit.....was pretty much flawless at 800 pounds..looked perfect with a rolled over blossom end...and then on August 25th a dill ring started show and progress rapidly....opened 2 small holes and they were caulked..one got air and that was her demise. she stopped growing at 373" ..got soft a couple weeks later..upon inspection a HUGE bottom split was seen when opening the top....I could touch the mesh under the fruit raching down thru the pumpkin...Solid 8 to 9 inches walls everwhere in the fruit and a good 12 inches on th emassive shoulders...this one had to go heavy...There is how our 1354 behaved

My 1354 which I have been calling Spongebob Square pants will be loaded tonight for our Friday afternoon trip to Altoona. It had some stem issues but has a nice blocky even shape with no sag lines. I need it to go a little heavy for a new personal best.

One of our 1354's and our Reiss 1233 shut down early during the early August cold snap. The other 1354 fruit was grown on a converted main and split on 9/5. It taped out at 946 and actual weight was 1010. It grew in the same spot as the 1469 but the walls were about 3 inches thicker. It was pollinated on 7/15, 2 weeks later than the other one and was not affected as much by the cold temps.

My 1354 slowed way down in mid august and then slowed to a crawl all of september with hardly any growth. The fruit is a very long, wide, and low to the ground fruit with lots of canteloping, which when I chart it for a weight estimate it is hard to tell what it will go. My guess is the high 600s to low 700s, I will find out at the Littelton weighoff on the 14th. I am wondering if anyone else has gotten a very long fruit off of the 1354 seed also ?? From the pictures I have seen, It seems to throw tall not so long fruits.
