Great job Jim. 425lbs weighed at Altoona. Beating the old record of 385. A nice looking one too.

Wanna see a thousand in Maryland someday....It can be done easily with the good soil and experience. Go for it. Great way to get started by knocking off old records.

It seems as though I might have posted prematurely. I see on the GPC page that a grower was credited with a 600lber from MD. I was told that this pumpkin was DQ'd. Not sure what is going on???

Sorry, I haven't had access to the web. My name is Jim Gerhardt and the pumpkin was grown in Woodbine, MD 21797. Here is the deal with the other pumpkin:
The other weighed 612lbs. 1) the grower was not present so it should have been an immediate GPC DQ. 2) there was a giant split in the blossom prior to hitting the scales, also a GPC DQ.
I don't know why they decided to post the result as official, however I can say that I was told by two members of the weigh-in crew that mine was the official record and that if the other pumpkin was one of the top five they would not have accepted it. Considering the state record was at stake they shouldn't have accepted it anyways but I didn't want to cause an arguement at my first weighoff.
I won't put up a fight about the record but that pumpkin was not legit and anyone who saw it will tell you the same.

No, never mind I will put up a fight. Anyone who knows who to contact at the GPC please email me at [email protected]
It's not fair that a UOW pumpkin should take my record away.

This is disappointing to say the least as this will put a damper on what should have been a great day for one of the two MD growers. Now it is probably too late to go back and change things. A state record was to be decided so more attention should given to this situation. I understand that the event holders have a lot on their plates but come on.

State records are a personal accomplishment not to be taken lightly and congratz to Jim Gerhardt the new State Record holder for Giant Pumpkins!!!!! Since the only people in the world that care are on this website it certainly is not too late to set the record straight. Duncan....update your list ! Congratz Jim.

I second that. Hats off to both growers but a split into the cavity is an automatic DQ. Jim should have the title.
