Is it only me, but this years crop of rookies were outstanding. My hat is off to those that studied this obsession and pulled out of their patch giant pumpkins right up there with the heavy hitters.

Bill brings up a great point the GPC has it's first "rookie of the year" award. Please post the qualifing people on this post, it will help us out. To be eligible for this award the fruit must be shown at a certified GPC site and the grower must have never shown a fruit before.

I agree with Bill. Watching the "Rookies" this year has been fun. They scare me!1200 lbs first year and I cant even get that after 8 years of trying!

This is my fourth year of being a rookie and I finally grew three plants to term. I hope my fifth year of beeing a rookie is even better.

my 2 cents worth
i have seen more new growers post up great results than ever before. obviously these people didnt just fall off the turnip truck. they may have received advise from a veteran grower, read some langevin books on the subject, or are basicly good gardeners to begin with. ( or a combination of all three )
either way ya gotta tip your hat to there accomplishments.

Can you give a definitive explaination of what a true rookie is? Is it never having ever grown AG's, or never having grown a monster?

As a rookie, I must comment that I think this year's crop of rookies is a direct reflection of the veterans here and the help they provided. THANK YOU!

A true rookie is green (behind the ears) at pollination, orange at day 30 and blue (ribboned) in the end of the season.
I agree, great accomplishments and scary too. Way to go guys!

I would also like to thank my support group of Doug Wallace and Bill Foss, Tom B, Frank Plus many Others who helped with advise on germinating, plant protection vine burying, Fertilizers, pesticides, weeding, watering, culling, positioning, measuring, moving and of course what to do with them when I'm done?? Also to the 2006 Rookie class that seemed to include a unique blend of smartasses!! Keep it up and watch out next year.. Without this website for instant answers to the 1,000 questions I had my rookie year I might not have become so addicted!! Also a special thanks to my friends and family for putting up with me, I'll be OK, Really I will!!!! Until Next year that is...
