I'm far from an expert. But, I know that when I've gotten the sand down in time, the fruit usually sets. If it just sits on the soil, it usually doesn't make it. At some point, when it looks like the fruit'll make it, I'll normally slip a sheet of styrafoam underneath. The only time I've had a problem with a pumpkin rotting was last year when I ran out of sand and didn't get enough down. I lost a funny shaped, but nice coloured, pumpkin at about 150 pounds.

Wheelbarrows, how big did it get before it aborted? May not have taken in the first place.

Is the white a fuzzy white, like a mold, or is it just a discolouration as the pumpkin starts to rot?
