Now that my season is officially over I've taken a few moments to look back at some of the stuff that cost me pounds. 1. Starting seeds to late. 2. Setting up hoop houses AFTER the frost threat is over (Duh whats up with that) 3. Forgot to close the gate to the patch, Dog gets in the patch, splits open main vine. Another Duh. 4. Poor vine management. Cost me a split main on another plant causing plant growth to slow to a crawl. 5. Grew two plants in a patch that is only big enough for one. 6. The WIZ whoops me, again at the weigh-off. (This simply can not happen again)
The list goes on and on and --------LOL LB

Yo LB, Some things cannot be changed, rotation of the earth, direction the sun rises, hail in Colorado, and oh yah......see item 6. Looking forward to growing with you again next year my friend......but this time we will turn our energy towards a different quest.........the magic number here is 1009.........look to the colorado southern gentlemen, look to the northern gentleman......game is on. There will be no rest until then.....Its going to be a very long winter........damn

TheWiz did this wrong.
1). Observing my roots structure, I will no longer use peat pots, my roots went roundy round for too long.
2). Will not use the polymear, root system needs to search for water at first, instead of being readily available close by.
3). Use splints to assist with the laying down of the plant in the begging to relieve stress and posible vine splits from the wind and the weight during this critical timeframe.
4). Finish my automated watering system so I can be at work and not worry about misting. And be able to water at set times to apply it evenly, early, and precise amounts with the flick of a button.
5). Get a proven seed in my hot little hands.
6). Keep my eyes to the sky, and install hail netting at least over the wizardnator.
7). Better vine management.
8). One plant not 3 in the wizardnator.
9). Focus......always looka eye.......
10). Help LongBeard cut down his trees.
11). Dont use a 5 year old unknown sprayer to apply foliar fertilzer. Duh....
12). Dont let the wife put her white fly infested over winter geranuims outside, Burn em now!!
13). Whoop up on the springs folks, current state record holder and LB......... :)
Its going to be a long winter....... Grow'em BIG

1)I didn't plan for cucumber beetles. I never saw them(or noticed them) other years.
2)I didn't train my early plants well(when under 4' mainvines). I lost a few early secondaries because of it.
3. I covered my fruit with a light blanket only. I believe this is why I had a problem with blossom end rot, due to a wet blanket sitting on the blossom end. I see the value of a shade structure, instead of a blanket only.
I'm sure I did some other things wrong, that I'm not aware of.

I dont know about that Jon,not just because it was off my 699 seed but I have never seen a more perfect plant in all my years of growing. your 699 didnt have a tendril even out of place, it was a perfection how you grew that plant. You definatly know how to grow pumpkins and nature is something you cant control. You got a big one coming next year for sure, NATURE OWES YOU ONE,lol.
I gotta show this again Jon http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=48707 http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=48486

1. Planted 3 plants in a space that is made for 2.
2. Played around with Calcium a bit much, not sure of its results as I had one fruit go 20 percent light and another go 20 percent heavy (and they were only grown 12 ft apart from each other).
3. Didnt drink enough beer.

1. In an effort to prune tertiary vines (after a week out of town in July)... I quickly took a 3 inch knife to my 1233 Reiss... needless to say, it wasn't a teriary... and it wasn't even a secondary... it was the main vine... about 2 feet after the pumpkin. what a moron.
2. a week later, i walked right on top of the main vine of my 904 northrup and snapped it off 3 feet after the pumpkin. once again, what a moron.
3. found neighbor kid standing on top of a young 100+ pound pumpkin in '05. that one will never happen again... needless to say neighbor relations are now a little strained...

I did not set a new persomal best, nor a new state record. I wonder how wrong I can go in 2007 trying to correct these mistakes.......

Crammed 5 plants in a garden made for 3 plants. Each plant only really had about 350-375 sq ft. Next year I'm going back to 3 larger plants (500-600 sq ft).

Backed off on fertilizing,a pumpkin I thought had bad splitting going on at the stem and shoulder.Splits didn't even come close to what I saw at the topsfield weigh off this year, well I guess we live and learn!!! That won't happen next year.

Likely the major wrong was to plant one in the first place. Being a slow learner I will do that again in 2007. You don't really want to hear the Paul Harvy's rest of the story. :)
