Does any one compost their pumpkin once seeds are gone? Worms seemed to love it last year.

I put this year's chunks of pumpkins on our gourd patch. They seem to rot down to just a thin dry sheet, which I till into the soil in the spring.

I do the same. I cut them into 1-2" slabs.

I tried shedding them by hand with a hashbrown grater, way too much work IMO, and dangerous for the fingers. The stainless steel grater bent out of shape as well.

I CHOP AND ROLL...mine into the compost after seasonal carving and rot down on display. Stinky but good stuff none the less. Cover them to eliminate temporary stinch if you have close neighbors.

Me too, I dig a trench and cut it up into chunks. When I want to go fishing, I know where to look for the worms.

Any concerns about disease? I've heard that if you've had mildew or bugs that you shouldn't compost your leaves and vines. But, what about the fruit?

Powdery Mildew will not overwinter in the north. By the time the plants are pulled in October, most bugs are gone and do not overwinter in them. I compost everything, unless the plant showed signs of certain diseases like Sclerotinia, those are burned immediately.

Once in a great while Mother Nature seems to make a mistake. In her book on composting She says to just drop it on the ground and forget it. Everything once living remains as a mulch until it rots and becomes compost. To date I have never seen an apparent mess that did not have man behind it.

I put my 1500 lbs worth of pumpkins right back into the compost pile, I figure you should return all the nutrients that your pumpkins took out
