While I have a general idea about seed crossing and genetics there is still a ton of stuff about this subject that I don' totally understand.
One question I have is the following:
If I have a 1097.5 Beachy (f845 Bobier X m723 Bobier) and a 1367.5 Rose (f723 Bobier X m845 Bobier)would these seeds make a good cross since the male/female parents are opposite or is it a good practice to cross only seeds which have completely different parents?

I guess the question I'm trying to ask is would this be a form of in-breeding that would cause an inferior plant/fruit?

Hoots, I've always thought about these types of questions also. What I've seemed to notice on the inbread lines such as a 845X723 cross, there seems to be more dmg fruit in their progeny than other un-related crosses such as 845X898. Maybe it's just me...?

It seems they both potentially could grow huge fruit, but inbreading may just have higher risk factors. JUST MY OPINION THOUGH!!!

Think Shiznit's reply is worthy of consideration. I wish some seedsman with experience would post on this subject.
....Right or wrong I have always tried to cross out line good to my pumpkin and back to the selected cross as well.
Secondly I look for traits I might like to have inbred. I have been told but never shown proof that the desired traits might be pleasing to consider in your male to the female for pollination. The inverse or back cross may not have what you would desire going back in which case you determine a different male instead of just backcrossing because you only have two plants. In this case look to your friend's patches for help.

There have been a ton of damaged fruit from 845/898 crosses, you just don't hear about them for some reason.

When you inbreed you are as likely to refine undesired traits as desired traits. Take a coin and flip it 3600 times; that may give you an estimate of your results.
