I'm interested in growing orange pumpkins. I think the most logical approach to this is to grow seeds that are from orange pumpkins and prefereably pollinated with orange pumpkins. But I need to know who grew orange pumpkins. I've reviewed the AGGC and found about 15 pumpkins that have exceptional color. Unfortunately only about 1/2 the pumpkins in the AGGC have photos. I have no idea how many pumpkins actually get submitted to the AGGC. Now that my ramblings are over- My question is What was the prettiest pumpkin that you saw this year. Be it in your own patch, someone elses, or at a weighoff?

1099 Clark was the best I have ever seen in person. Not that I have seen them all but is was a beauty! You may also want to look for the seed that grew the orange pumpkin you like.

shameless plug here:

My 1046.6 was grown off the 364 Webster (1016X1036) it had beautiful color and natural shine(pics on AGGC and in my diary) and went 3.6% over at the scales.

I used the 691 Duchezeau (1121FordX1225) as the pollinator both parents grown off the 1016. In my mind with this much 1016 in the background the color should remain and hopefully the "heavy" will continue.

My 1023dmg was the reverse cross.

I will be planting these in the "orange" side of my patch next year.

318 Est Tanner (869.5 Calai x 370 Rose) about 20 good seeds
417 Tanner (869.5 Calai x 670 Daigle) about 10 not so good seeds.
you can find pictures in my dairy and on the AGGC.

Happens to be the only one on Brian's list I saw in person so maybe I'm a little biased but the 820 Sandvik was impressive.

I'll add the following:
982 Northrup(1101 Northrup X 810 Dill)
519.5 Dale Lanterman
653 Gibson....the last two are pictured in Mark from Western PA's diary.

Also, my 733(grown off the 1233.Reiss) won the "prettiest pumpkin" prize at the Delano, MN weighoff.

The 730 Dill could be a good one(1016 Delatas X 810 Dill). It's one of the best colored 1016's I've seen. If the Dill's sell this seed at their website, I may at least grow it as a backup.

There was no recognition for orange and pretty at Cooperstown, N.Y. but my 763.6 grown from a Reiss 1233 got the unofficial nicest color and shape recognition, from the public, as well as many grower friends. I could have sold it, for a buck a pound, to at least three buyers. Heck all I wanted out of it were a couple of seeds and an opportunity to carve or sculpt the bute. I have a secret desire to become a respectable carver. I have to be hands on the big ones to get that goal on line. It is posted in my diary both as a pumpkin and finally sculpted for kids of all ages to enjoy while raising a significant amount of charity bucks, for the American Cancer Society. I have a few seeds left for anyone who would give it a grow. The seed count was very low. It is crossed with the 978 Berard another great orange fruit. I and a dozen or so growers are in the grow with it next summer. I do not think the color can be bettered. The shape was great. Any problems that caused it to not go well over a thousand pounds were the fault of the grower. That's my opinion.

brian, you,d have to go a long way to beat the shape and colour of the 820 sandvik and it was pollinted with the 670 daigle that grew the 785.5 .that was very orange itself. craig :o)

I took those pictures floating around the internet of the 1250 Kline, with Al Eatons grandkids sitting on top and believe me, that was one beautiful pumpkin! Many seasoned growers said it was one of the most beautiful large pumpkins they had ever seen.
It is crossed with Todds 1204, that was out of the 1016 Delatas and crossed with the 1179 Kline which was 735 Pukos cross 1016 Daletas!
Talk about orange genetics. This one will be grown

Yep , I saw the 1099 Clark up at the Cumberland Fair in Maine and it was a nice round shiney orange with the orange spots in the skin . I think it was grown from his 606.Put that one on your short list.

840 Kurilich was a real beauty. Offspring from Joe's 1029 and 802 are performing pretty consistently for color and shape. The 840 was off his 802 and was 11% heavy, in addition to being the Dill Award winner at the St. Johns weigh off.

You certainly have added a few more to my list of great looking pumpkins for 2006. Does anyone know the parents of the 519 Lanterman or the 653 Gibson. The 764 Dawson listed in Marcs diary is also a nice looking pumpkin but the picture is of just a portion of the pumpkin.

Brian,
I've trying to find the out the seeds that grew the 519 Lanterman and 653 Gibson. No info. yet, but I'll try and let you know, if I find anything out. The 764 Dawson was grown off the 603.5 Muller, and pollinated with the 1370 Rose.
This has been a great posting, as I'm very interested in seeds that produce great looking pumpkins.

I grew a really nice looking pumpkin on the 801 Black. I used it to pollinate the 1230 Daletas. I only salvaged about 20 seeds from the 1230 fruit; if anyone seriously wants to plant it, send me an e-mail.
