Hey Papa Bill, there are a few of us female people whose husbands eyes glaze over when the pumpkin topic comes up. My husband gives me the nervous, shes very strange laugh!
No doubt hoping that I will change the subject. KathyT

KathyT....I'm with you. In my household, it's the WIFE who is the pumpkin nut. The rest of the family just rolls their eyes at the "P" word. The trick is to get them hooked!!!

The wife says she "tolerates" them. She also knows I could be doing worst things with my time and if she can not find me I'm somewhere under that canopy of leaves burying vines. She's been after me for a nicer looking lawn for quite awhile now so I tilled up about 3600sq/ft of our lawn and now have the most beautiful looking winter rye growing in the neighborhood. Less mowing, more growing. LOL

I consider myself to be blessed. My son is into the pumpkins and watermelons, My wife is into the long gourds, and My daughter is into gourds and pumpkin recipes. At work, my boss and his son are growing AG's, and a co-worker grew a 506# pumpkin his first year out. Pumpkin loading has become an annual after-work office event just before Pumpkinfest. No one seems to complain about my screen saver, which is a series of pumpkin photos. I guess it helps to be living in the Official Pumpkin Capital of Iowa.

I think all the above posts are the reasons the BP family feel a close bond to each other. This actually IS our "secret society"! When I first found this site, I thought, "These people are over-the-edge"! Now, here I am, right with you. My husband, who thinks he's quite the comedian, has got great enjoyment from making people laugh with stories about my pumpkin growing. He's also a workaholic and won't take vacations. Since I don't bug him about this, he doesn't even ask what I'm spending on supplies, etc. AND THIS IS A GOOD THING! Your partner in crime.....Glenna Rea

I knew I wasnt alone....I feel so much better now.....my wife will be taking care of the veggie garden so I can apply all my efforts growing in 3 places...she wants to grow a plot of smaller pepos......little does she know she is already infected with the magic......ha! .....next year she will want her own giant AG area to compete with the WIZ....so its just a matter of time now......hehe

Options: I can go to the bar and drink with my friends or stay home and play in the pumpkin patch !!! At this time of year she goes shopping and I play on this machine ! If she has a $$$$$ shopping experience, it's OK , and If I spend a few sense on seeds, it's OK ! We each spend our own over budget money !

I must be one of the lucky ones. Our family enjoys the whole pumpkin gamut from BigPumpkins.com to hosting auctions to growing (home & school) to weigh-offs & conferences.

Yeah...it sometimes takes time from the family. But so does my leadership responsibility with the Boy Scouts. One of the first things I tell new leaders is to never lose sight of WHY they got involved with Scouting. It does take conviction & time to lead. But time away from family doing something we love must be balanced by enjoying better quality time WITH family as a result.

In other words; find or create useful ways for family to be included.

Consider the alternatives. Boozing...cheap women at bars...etc.

I'd say this is a pretty wholesome hobby as evidenced by the fine people we have joined together with here.

I can talk about The P,s all i want .No one here but me. But I my daughters all ask me when about them when they call. The kids at the school are excited about them too. My neighbors are blown away when I tell them that my Pumkins are like peanuts compared to the ones that the Heavy Hitters grow. I just tell them to wait and see I,ll have some like in a year or 2. My Barber is wanting seed from me now. He keeps some of the pictures Ive taking at the weigh offs to show others how big the pumpkin can get

I think that Tremor hit the nail on the head when he mentioned "balance".

Most of my life I have been a person who has naturally done most things to an excessive degree.
Twelve years ago, one of my best friends gave me a tee shirt for my 50th birthday. The front of it reads "TEMPERATE EXTREMIST" and the back reads "MODERATELY EXCESSIVE".

It was a great gift because when I wear it, I am reminded to try to keep the activities in my life in balance.......family, friends, pumpkins, work, other activities........ya gotta find that balance.

12 years later and I'm still workin' on it.

My favorite line was "Yes Honey I do need more seeds than I can grow....how many shoes do you have again?.............." Hilarious! I need a membership in the PGWSJDGI though, or have we established that BigPumpkins.com has filled that gap. Great thread!
